ON THE ISSUES

REPRODUCTIVE RIGHTS:

In June 2022, Ivey called on Congress to codify “safe access” to reproductive health.[v] Though EMILY’s List supported Donna Edwards in the Democratic primary, Ivey was in agreement with her on abortion rights and ran ads on the issue.[vi]

ECONOMY, JOBS & TAXES:

During the 2022 Democratic primary, Ivey ran in-part on boosting resources for economic recovery in the district.[vii] He supports collective bargaining rights and removing barriers to union organizing.[viii]

HEALTHCARE & SOCIAL SAFETY NET:

Ivey supports expanding health-care coverage and paid family leave.[ix] He also supports expanding social security.[x]

IMMIGRATION & BORDER SECURITY:

Ivey supports “comprehensive, fair and just immigration reform,” as well as the DREAM Act.[xi]

CRIME & PUBLIC SAFETY:

Ivey previously served as the top prosecutor in Prince George's County and as an Assistant US Attorney in Washington DC, and largely ran in the 2022 Democratic primary on his record as the Prince George's County’s state’s attorney, spotlighting his work on police accountability as well as the large decline in violent crime.[xii] In 2012, he was described as “a real advocate for cops,” by Police1, which also cited his positive impact on combating domestic violence.[xiii] He has argued “defund the police” is a “distraction” that damaged Democrats, specifying “They want better policing. They want targeted policing. They want fair policing. They don’t want excessive force.”[xiv] He supports increasing funding for crime reduction and programs to assist at-risk youth.[xv]

GOVERNMENT INSTITUTIONS & ELECTION SECURITY:

In discussing election deniers in a December 2021 interview, Ivey argued, “One of the big problems we’ve got right now is leaders in Congress — in the House, the Senate — [and] governors sort of cowering from the responsibility of standing up to the folks who were spouting lies.”[xvi] He supports the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act.[xvii]

EDUCATION:

Ivey supported President Biden’s executive order on cancelling student debt and has pledged to “work to ensure everyone has access to higher education.”[xviii]

CLIMATE CHANGE, ENERGY & ENVIRONMENT:

Ivey supported the Inflation Reduction Act, spotlighting the bill’s provisions on climate action and clean energy. He has pledged to support infrastructure projects that create green energy jobs.[xix] [xx] [xxi]

GUN SAFETY:

Ivey has called for “getting illegal guns off the streets” as well as background checks “to stop violent people.”[xxii] He has also described easy access to guns as “not ‘freedom.’”[xxiii]

FOREIGN POLICY:

Ivey was helped to victory in the Democratic primary with millions of dollars in outside spending by the American-Israel Public Affairs Committee.[xxiv] He has said the US should play a “brokering” role in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and he opposes conditions on US foreign aid to Israel as well as the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement.[xxv] He has supported economic sanctions on Russia in response to its invasion of Ukraine.[xxvi]
