ON THE ISSUES

REPRODUCTIVE RIGHTS:

Friedman supports DREAMers and has advocated for a permanent pathway to citizenship for them and their families. [xxvii] Friedman opposes the idea of mass deportation, arguing it “would traumatize our community while also devastating our local economy.” [xxviii] She supports a “well-funded” process to help immigrants seek asylum in the U.S. “in a more humane and streamlined fashion, and more supportive policies and programs for refugees fleeing war and oppression,” but also believes we must secure the border “to keep out violent criminals and close loopholes which have allowed cartels to exploit the system.” [xxix] She would have supported the bipartisan border bill that failed to pass Congress and has called Trump’s immigration policies “Un-American,” as well as “cruel, inhuman, undemocratic, untruthful, polluting, and lots of other bad things.” [xxx] [xxxi] While serving as a member of the California State Assembly, Friedman has supported legislation that would authorize DREAMers to participate in County Central Committees, expand Medi-Cal eligibility to low-income adults regardless of immigration status, authorize Medicaid for undocumented families, prohibit California prisons from working with ICE contractors, prohibit landlords from disclosing the immigration status of tenants, and establish a statewide sanctuary policy .[xxxii] [xxxiii] [xxxiv] [xxxv] [xxxvi] [xxxvii] [xxxviii] [xxxix] [xl] [xli] [xlii] [xliii]

IMMIGRATION & BORDER SECURITY:

In 2019, Friedman voted for a bill that would increase income taxes for California residents who earned more than $1 million per year. [lviii] [lix] She opposed the Trump administration’s decision to place a cap on the SALT deduction and has advocated for raising the cap or eliminating it altogether. [lx]

ECONOMY & JOBS:

According to her campaign website, Friedman has been a “champion” for organized labor since the beginning of her career as a member of the Glendale City Council, where she “spearheaded the City’s first Project Labor Agreement.” [xliv] Friedman has worked closely with union members “to address equity and justice” as a member of the California State Assembly and has supported efforts to expand paid family and sick leave in California. [xlv] [xlvi] [xlvii] [xlviii] [xlix] [l] She has also voted for legislation that would allow state legislative staff to unionize, authorize collective bargaining for childcare workers, and increase the minimum wage for healthcare workers to $25 per hour. [li] [lii] [liii] [liv] [lv] [lvi] In Congress, Friedman has pledged to “always be a champion for working people” and fight to increase the federal minimum wage to $15 an hour. [lvii]

TAXES:

In 2019, Friedman voted for a bill that would increase income taxes for California residents who earned more than $1 million per year. [lviii] [lix] She opposed the Trump administration’s decision to place a cap on the SALT deduction and has advocated for raising the cap or eliminating it altogether. [lx]

CRIME & PUBLIC SAFETY:

Friedman has worked to reform California’s “broken criminal justice system” and believes that in order to reduce crime we must “reduce hopelessness, deep poverty, and trauma.” [lxi] [lxii] She has advocated for the federal government to increase investment in local law enforcement training and facilities, as well as funding for new police officers, community violence prevention, additional crisis responders and dispatchers, and addiction treatment and mental health infrastructure. [lxiii] Friedman has also called for the federal government to fund anti-recidivism programs and direct more resources to historically underserved communities.[lxiv] During her time in the California State Assembly, Friedman has supported several measures aimed at addressing police violence and holding law enforcement accountable, including legislation that would prohibit police departments from authorizing certain restraint techniques, prohibit the use of tear gas on protestors, expand the public’s access to police records, authorize counties to establish a Sheriff Oversight Board, prohibit the transfer of police officers following misconduct convictions, and establish restitution for victims of police violence. [lxv] [lxvi] [lxvii] [lxviii] [lxix] [lxx] [lxxi] [lxxii] [lxxiii] [lxxiv] [lxxv] [lxxvi] She also voted for a bill that would require California law enforcement agencies to receive approval before acquiring military-grade equipment. [lxxvii] [lxxviii] Additionally, Friedman co-wrote a bill that would require peace officer curriculum to include instruction on hate crimes and require the California Attorney General to investigate the police use of deadly force. [lxxix] [lxxx] [lxxxi]

CLIMATE CHANGE, ENERGY & ENVIRONMENT:

Friedman has been “uncompromising” in her fight to combat climate change, calling it “an existential threat.” [lxxxii] [lxxxiii] She has fought to increase California’s utilization and development of clean energy sources and promote sustainable methods of transportation. Friedman has also worked to phase out single-use plastics, ban the use of PFAS chemicals in consumer products, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. [lxxxiv] In the California State Assembly, she has supported legislation aimed at safeguarding the environment and combating climate change, including bills that would establish the California Climate Crisis Act, oppose offshore drilling, extend California’s cap-and-trade policies, increase the state’s renewable energy target, require large companies doing business in California to disclose their climate risk and carbon emissions, and appropriate funds for various clean energy programs. [lxxxv] [lxxxvi] [lxxxvii] [lxxxviii] [lxxxix] [xc] [xci] [xcii] [xciii] [xciv] [xcv] [xcvi] [xcvii] [xcviii] She also voted for measures that would increase tax rebates for electric vehicles and require all new self-driving cars to emit zero emissions by 2030.[xcix] [c] [ci] [cii] In Congress, Friedman will “focus on phasing out fossil fuel production in the United States and incentivizing renewable energy infrastructure,” as well as the “rapid decarbonization” of the energy, building, heavy industry, and transportation sectors.[ciii] She has also pledged to oppose any new offshore drilling or fracking. [civ]

FOREIGN POLICY:

Friedman would support additional military aid to Ukraine and Israel. She has said Israel has the right to defend itself, but that “we all want to see this bloody war end.” Friedman has advocated for a two-state solution that includes a more stable government in Gaza “that acknowledges its neighbor’s right to exist.” [cv]

HEALTHCARE & SOCIAL SAFETY NET:

According to her campaign website, Friedman “has been a vocal supporter of single-payer healthcare.” [cvi] As a member of the California State Assembly, Friedman co-authored two bills that would have put the state on a pathway to healthcare for all: The Healthy California Act and The California Guaranteed Health Care for All Act. [cvii] [cviii] She has voted for legislation that would require citizens to purchase health insurance, limit what hospitals can charge for emergency care, require large group health plans to cover medically necessary prescription drugs, establish a statewide individual mandate program for health insurance, and allow the state to contract with drug manufacturers to produce low-cost generic drugs. [cix] [cx] [cxi] [cxii] [cxiii] [cxiv] [cxv] [cxvi] [cxvii] [cxviii]

DEMOCRACY:

Friedman believes ensuring an ethical government is “extremely important.” She has said the U.S. Supreme Court “should be held to the same ethical standards around the taking of gifts and reporting to the public as other elected officials” and called for an independent ethics office to investigate claims of improper conduct related to Supreme Court justices. [cxix] Friedman does not support imposing age limits on elected officials. [cxx] She is also “extremely concerned by the rise of misinformation and the impacts that AI and deep fakes are already having on Democracy and public engagement” and would support holding social media companies accountable and implementing strong regulations around artificial intelligence. [cxxi] While serving in the California State Assembly, Friedman has supported legislation that would establish an independent Citizen’s Redistricting Commission in Sacramento County, amend the signature gathering process for ballot initiatives, authorize vote by mail absentee ballots, allow individuals on parole for a felony conviction to vote, and authorize same day voter registration. [cxxii] [cxxiii] [cxxiv] [cxxv] [cxxvi] [cxxvii] [cxxviii] [cxxix]

SOCIAL ISSUES:

Friedman believes LGBTQ+ rights are “fundamental human rights” and has fought to end job and housing discrimination, increase healthcare access and protections for transgender individuals, and “ensure all spaces are open and welcoming to people across the spectrum of gender and sexual orientation.” [cxxx] As a member of the California State Assembly, Friedman has supported bills that would require retailers and department stores to have a gender neutral section, recognize nonbinary as an official legal gender, establish privacy rights for gender-affirming care, authorize incarcerated transgender individuals to be housed by gender identify in California prisons, and establish state protections for healthcare providers who prescribe gender-affirming care from out-of-state legal action. [cxxxi] [cxxxii] [cxxxiii] [cxxxiv] [cxxxv] [cxxxvi] [cxxxvii] [cxxxviii] [cxxxix] [cxl] She also voted for measures that would prohibit advertising conversion therapy and prohibit California schools from banning books. [cxli] [cxlii] [cxliii] [cxliv]
