ON THE ISSUES

REPRODUCTIVE RIGHTS:

When he previously served in Congress, Stutzman supported the No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion and Abortion Insurance Full Disclosure Act, among other pro-life bills, and attended March for Life rallies. [iv] His current campaign platform argues that “There is still work to do on both the state and federal level,” and that even after Roe v. Wade was overturned, “our battle to protect life is not over.” [v]

IMMIGRATION & BORDER SECURITY:

Stutzman’s campaign platform describes the border as his “top priority,” advocating for finishing the wall, creating a “legal system that protects our citizens from the threats we already face,” and for a system that operates “with the principle of having a ‘high wall and a wide gate.’” [vi]

ECONOMY & JOBS:

Stutzman’s campaign website decries debt and “out of control spending,” arguing that “When government is held accountable to live within its means, the full potential of the American economy is unleashed, and families thrive.” [vii] In 2016, he was one of few Republicans to vote against the conference’s federal budget proposal, instead pitching his own plan. [viii] He has pledged to focus on the district’s manufacturing, automobile, and agriculture industries. [ix]

TAXES:

Stutzman advocates for fixing the “broken tax system.” When he previously served in Congress, he frequently advocated against raising taxes without cuts in spending. [x] [xi]

CRIME & PUBLIC SAFETY:

Stutzman pledges to “Back the Blue” “proudly with gratitude and honor,” including supporting legal protections for police. [xii]

CLIMATE CHANGE, ENERGY & ENVIRONMENT:

The League of Conservation Voters gave Stutzman a lifetime score of 4% for his votes on environmental and climate issues when he last served in Congress. [xiii] When he was previously in Congress, he opposed the rejection of the Keystone XL Pipeline and supported the repeal of the crude oil export ban. [xiv]

FOREIGN POLICY:

Stutzman has blamed Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the Hamas attack on Israel on President Biden’s leadership, arguing that under Trump, “we had no new wars.” [xv] He has pledged to “take on” China on economic issues.[xvi]

HEALTHCARE & SOCIAL SAFETY NET:

A longtime opponent of the Affordable Care Act, Stutzman was among a group of House members who in 2013 attempted to attach a measure to a must-pass spending bill that would defund the law. [xvii] His current campaign platform advocates for expanding “free market solutions,” including health savings accounts, transportable coverage, tax credits for businesses, and providing protection for doctors from “frivolous lawsuits.” [xviii] He also supports “thoughtful reforms” to preserve Social Security and Medicare. [xix]

DEMOCRACY:

During the campaign, Stutzman alleged that Democrats were “trying to use the judicial system” to block Trump from running for office. [xx]

SOCIAL ISSUES:

Stutzman’s campaign platform touts his work authoring laws to protect “marriage, the family and life at every stage,” and pledges to “continue to stand in defense of the Judeo-Christian values that made America great.” [xxi] He also decries “indoctrination of students by liberal professors” as a “pandemic,” and supports denying funding to higher education institutions that do not protect open debate on campus. [xxii] In 2010, he voted in favor of a bill defining marriage as being between one man and one woman. [xxiii]
