On the Issues

REPRODUCTIVE RIGHTS:

Chavez-DeRemer said she was encouraged by the US Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, but does not support a total ban on abortion, stating that “criminalizing women is a non-starter.”[viii] [ix] However, he has expressed support for a heartbeat bill, prohibiting abortion after six weeks.[x] Chavez-DeRemer has previously criticized “DC radicals” she claimed advocated for “abortion on demand.”[xi]

ECONOMY, JOBS & TAXES:

Chavez-DeRemer has blamed Democrats for rising inflation and pledged to focus on reducing costs in Congress.[xii] She supports lower taxes and reigning in spending and advocates for standing “against the Left’s agenda with Conservative leadership to get our economy back on track and make our country affordable again.”[xiii] She is endorsed by the National Federal of Independent Businesses.[xiv]

HEALTHCARE & SOCIAL SAFETY NET:

Chavez-DeRemer has criticized “government-funded healthcare” and has argued the US needs an incentive program that allows patients more options to drive insurance and healthcare costs down.[xv] [xvi] She has also criticized the Affordable Care Act and blamed Oregon’s budget deficit on Medicaid expansion.[xvii] [xviii]

IMMIGRATION & BORDER SECURITY:

Chavez-DeRemer has advocated for closing the southern border, citing the influx of drugs and not knowing enough about the individuals coming into the US.[xix] [xx] She opposes amnesty for undocumented immigrants.[xxi]

CRIME & PUBLIC SAFETY:

Chavez-DeRemer says Portland has become a “lawless place marked by riots, autonomous zones, and defunded police units.” She argues cuts to the local police budget has led to an 800% increase in homicides and says “we must restore proper funding and resources” to law enforcement.[xxii]

GOVERNMENT INSTITUTIONS & ELECTION SECURITY:

When asked if President Biden won the 2020 election, Chavez-DeRemer said, “I think that there’s some question to what people felt. People were, at least voters I talked to, they felt like it was unusual.” She has also questioned Oregon’s vote-by-mail system.[xxiii] Chavez-DeRemer has called for Oregon’s elections to be audited and supports passing voter ID laws and banning ballot harvesting.[xxiv]

EDUCATION:

Chavez-DeRemer has expressed support for defunding the US Department of Education, calling the agency “defunct” and arguing that education should be a state issue.[xxv] She opposed “unconstitutional mandates and harmful school closures” during the COVID-19 pandemic. She strongly opposes Critical Race Theory being taught in schools and supports a Parental Bill of Rights “that ensures transparency for school curriculums and protects the rights of parents.”[xxvi]

CLIMATE CHANGE, ENERGY & ENVIRONMENT:

Chavez-DeRemer has cast doubt on climate science and plans to decarbonize the US economy, arguing that the climate “has been changing for thousands and thousands of years. We can’t predict when the climate’s going to change.”[xxvii] She says the Green New Deal would “decimate” rural Oregon.[xxviii] Chavez-DeRemer has called for reopening the Keystone XL Pipeline and has claimed that drilling for oil in the US would be “cleaner” and “better” than in other countries.[xxix]

BIG TECH & DATA PRIVACY:

Chavez-DeRemer has accused Big Tech of bias toward Republicans and “repeatedly suppressing conservative voices.” She will work to end Big Tech censorship and protect freedom of speech in Congress.[xxx]

GUN SAFETY:

Chavez-DeRemer is a gun owner, concealed carry permit holder, and a “proud NRA member.”[xxxi] [xxxii] In the wake of the Uvalde school massacre, she suggested mass shootings were caused by a “culture crisis” and said the government should focus on implementing existing gun laws rather than passing new gun safety regulations like banning assault weapons and requiring universal background checks on all gun sales.[xxxiii] [xxxiv] [xxxv]

FOREIGN POLICY:

Chavez-DeRemer believes lawmakers should promote polices that put America and Oregon first and that “our trade deals should benefit Made In America products and companies, not foreign governments who violate their own citizens’ human rights.”[xxxvi]
