ON THE ISSUES

REPRODUCTIVE RIGHTS:

Cherfilus-McCormick is pro-choice and condemned the “Supreme Court’s extremist majority” for overturning Roe v. Wade.[vii] She believes abortion bans are “systemic discrimination and racism in action.”[viii] In July 2022, she voted for a bill that would codify abortion rights into federal law.[ix] She also supports repealing the Hyde Amendment.[x]

ECONOMY, JOBS & TAXES:

Economic justice and building a more equitable future for all Americans have been top priorities for Cherfilus-McCormick in Congress.[xi] In 2021, she released her “People’s Prosperity Plan,” which would provide $1,000 per month in guaranteed income to individuals earning less than $75,000 a year.[xii] [xiii] [xiv] According to Cherfilus-McCormick’s estimate, the plan would cost $2.2 trillion and be paid for by increasing taxes on wealthy corporations and individuals.[xv] In May 2022, she introduced the People’s Prosperity Act, which would allow individual taxpayers a refundable rebate amount equal to $1,000 on their 2022 taxes.[xvi] She supported the bipartisan infrastructure bill, the Paycheck Fairness Act, and the Inflation Reduction Act, and has called for raising the minimum wage to $20 an hour to help people deal with increasing costs.[xvii] [xviii] [xix] [xx] She also supports universal paid family leave and voted for a bill that would temporarily suspend the federal gas tax.[xxi] [xxii] She believes small businesses are the “heartbeat” of communities and led an initiative in Florida to assist small businesses to acquire Payroll Protection Program grants, federal and state contracts, and investors.[xxiii]

HEALTHCARE & SOCIAL SAFETY NET:

Cherfilus-McCormick believes healthcare is a human right and that all Americans deserve to have access to affordable care.[xxiv] She supports expanding the ACA and moving towards a Medicare for All system. [xxv] [xxvi] Cherfilus-McCormick supports allowing Medicare to negotiate prescription drug prices and allowing Americans to import drugs from abroad.[xxvii] She has worked to end healthcare disparities, arguing that people’s zip codes should not determine the quality of care they receive.[xxviii] In March 2022, she voted for a bill that would lower the cost of insulin.[xxix] Cherfilus-McCormick supports expanding federal funding for Social Security and Medicare.[xxx] According to her campaign website, she has spent decades lobbying on Capitol Hill “to drive positive change” in healthcare reform.[xxxi]

IMMIGRATION & BORDER SECURITY:

Cherfilus-McCormick believes the current US immigration system is “unsustainable, inhumane, and counterproductive.”[xxxii] She supports “comprehensive” immigration reform that provides a pathway to citizenship for undocumented immigrants and will work to repeal Title 42, restore asylum rules, and expand opportunities for migrants to apply for residency or Temporary Protected Status.[xxxiii] [xxxiv] She also supports DREAMers and the DACA program, and has called for the current ICE system to be abolished.[xxxv] [xxxvi]

CRIME & PUBLIC SAFETY:

Cherfilus-McCormick will fight to dismantle discriminatory policies, police brutality, and systemic racism.[xxxvii] She has called for ending “qualified immunity,” restricting the sale of military weapons and equipment to law enforcement agencies, establishing a national database that tracks police disciplinary records, and “reprioritizing budgets and redirecting funds away from police departments.”[xxxviii] However, in October 2022, Cherfilus-McCormick suggested she did not agree with the “Defund the Police” movement.[xxxix] Notably, she would support protecting law enforcement officers from personal liability in civil lawsuits concerning alleged misconduct.[xl] Cherfilus-McCormick would like to abolish the for-profit prison system, eliminate mass incarceration, and end the war on drugs.[xli] In April 2022, she voted for a bill that would decriminalize marijuana at the federal level.[xlii] [xliii]

GOVERNMENT INSTITUTIONS & ELECTION SECURITY:

Cherfilus-McCormick has called on Congress to pass the For the People Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act.[xliv] [xlv] She has advocated for all US citizens to be automatically registered to vote when they turn 18, increasing election protections, and abolishing Super PACs and transitioning to publicly-funded campaigns. She also supports term limits, making Election Day a federal holiday, and restoring the voting rights of those with felony convictions.[xlvi] [xlvii]

EDUCATION:

Cherfilus-McCormick believes that no one should be prevented from going to school because they cannot afford it and will fight for free public university education.[xlviii] She supported the Biden administration’s plan to forgive some student debt and signed a July 2022 letter urging the government to extend the pause on student loan payments due to the continuing COVID-19 pandemic and rising inflation.[xlix] [l] [li] She has also supported legislation that would help close the achievement gap and has worked to ensure all students have access to a quality education.[lii] Cherfilus-McCormick advocates for universal pre-K and guaranteed affordable child care for working families with young children.[liii]

CLIMATE CHANGE, ENERGY & ENVIRONMENT:

Cherfilus-McCormick believes climate change is an “existential threat” and has called for the US to rejoin the Paris Climate Agreement.[liv] [lv] She supports the Green New Deal and argues bold steps must be taken to ensure we have clean air and water, including banning fracking and protecting the Everglades.[lvi] [lvii] Cherfilus-McCormick has blamed rising fuel prices on “Big Oil” companies and called on Congressional Democrats to hold them accountable.[lviii]

BIG TECH & DATA PRIVACY:

In 2021, Cherfilus-McCormick called for imposing a tax on the sale of personal data by large tech companies like Facebook, which she argued makes billions of dollars from these unregulated sales while helping shape public opinion by allowing disinformation to be distributed on its platform.[lix] [lx] [lxi]

GUN SAFETY:

Cherfilus-McCormick believes the gun violence epidemic in America is “only getting worse” and has pledged to never “back down from the fight to make our communities safer.”[lxii] [lxiii] She supports raising the purchasing age for semi-automatic weapons to 21, universal background checks, closing the “Charleston Loophole,” red flag laws, outlawing high-capacity magazines, banning silencers and suppressors, requiring the safe storage of firearms, and banning bump stocks and ghost guns.[lxiv] [lxv] [lxvi] Cherfilus-McCormick voted for the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act and has cosponsored legislation to ban assault weapons and support the implementation of extreme risk protection order laws at the state and local levels. [lxvii] [lxviii] [lxix] [lxx] [lxxi] [lxxii] Cherfilus-McCormick received an “F” rating from the NRA in 2022 and has been endorsed by Brady PAC.[lxxiii] [lxxiv]

FOREIGN POLICY:

Cherfilus-McCormick “vehemently” condemned Russian aggression towards Ukraine and has supported the Biden administration’s and NATO’s diplomatic efforts to “avoid conflict.”[lxxv] In March 2022, she voted to impost new sanctions on Russia and ban Russian oil imports.[lxxvi] She also supported bills that would expedite the delivery of military aid to Ukraine and revoke normal trade relations with Russia and Belarus.[lxxvii] [lxxviii] Notably, Cherfilus-McCormick is one of the hundreds of members of Congress permanently banned from visiting Russia.[lxxix] In July 2022, she voted for a bill that would increase domestic production of semiconductors, which she said would help curb dependence on “unfriendly foreign nations” like China.[lxxx]
